Director V. Somashekar first brought Puneeth onscreen when he was six months old in his thriller film Premada Kanike, starring Dr. Rajkumar and Aarathi. The film has a role of a girl who plays student, Poornima, is the real-life daughter of Rajkumar. The movie had set a new benchmark in crime-thriller genre, went on to win multiple awards and accolades including the Karnataka State Film Award for Best Film.


When Puneeth was just an year old, he acted in Vijay's Sanaadi Appanna, based on Krishnamoorthy Puranik's novel of the same name. The film had Dr. Rajkumar and Jaya Prada in lead roles. The supporting cast features Ashok, Balakrishna, R. Sampath, Thoogudeepa Srinivas, Papamma and Madhavi.The movie saw a theatrical run of 50 weeks. The film is considered a landmark in Kannada cinema. 


This movie was again directed by V. Somashekar, starring Dr. Rajkumar, along with Savitri, Padmapriya and Soukar Janaki in lead roles. The movie saw a theatrical run of 25 weeks. 


Two years later, directors Dorai-Bhagavan cast him as Shyam in Vasantha Geetha. The movie saw a theatrical run of 25 weeks. A portion of the song "Kannalle Eno" from this movie was re-used in the title track of Appu's Jackie movie released in 2010.


In the year 1981, Appu was seen in K. S. L. Swamy's mythological drama Bhoomige Banda Bhagavantha, in which he appeared as Lord Krishna. The film stars Lokesh, Lakshmi, Jai Jagadish and Vajramuni in lead roles. 


B. S. Ranga's Bhagyavantha, in which Appu recorded his first popular song, "Baana Daariyalli Soorya," composed by T. G. Lingappa. The film is a remake of director's own 1954 Telugu film Maa Gopi which itself was a remake of 1953 Hindi film Bhagyawan and its Marathi version Soubhagya. Performance of Puneeth was praised by critics and audience. The above mentioned song, sung by Appu is an evergreen hit, even today people listen to it. 


In the same year, he appeared in Chalisuva Modagalu with his father. The movie is directed by Singeetham Srinivasa Rao. The film starred Rajkumar, Saritha, Ambika and K. S. Ashwath in lead roles. The film was a major success at the box-office upon its release. The movie saw a theatrical run of 25 weeks. The movie is still famous because of its evergreen songs. For playing the role of Ramu, Puneeth received his first Karnataka State Film Award for Best Child Actor (Male). 

8. HOSA BELAKU (1982)

Again in the same year Appu appeared in the movie Hosa Belaku, directed by Dorai - Bhagwan duo. The film starred Rajkumar, Saritha and K. S. Ashwath in lead roles. The movie saw a theatrical run of 26 weeks. 


A mythological film directed by Vijay. The film stars Dr. Rajkumar, Saritha, Appu in lead roles. Here Puneeth played the role of Prahlada and has stunned everyone with his amazing acting skills. He has simply nailed some of the scenes against his father Hiranya Kashyapu, played by his father Dr. Rajkumar.


In the same year he was seen in Eradu Nakshatragalu, directed by Singeetham Srinivasa Rao. The film stars Dr. Rajkumar, Ambika and Puneeth Rajkumar in lead roles. Highlight of the film is, Appu played a double role in the movie. For playing the dual roles, Raja and Rajakumara, Puneeth received his second Karnataka State Film Award for Best Child Actor. The film was a major success at the box-office upon its release. 

11. YARIVANU (1984)

In 1984, Puneeth starred with Dr. Rajkumar in the thriller Yarivanu, directed by Dorai-Bhagawan and produced by Parvathamma Rajkumar. Appu sang "Kannige Kaanuva," one of the best evergreen song till date, written by Rajan-Nagendra. Again here Puneeth played a double role in the movie, though both roles doesn't appear together onscreen.

12. BETTADA HOOVU (1985)

His biggest break as a child actor came in Bettada Hoovu, directed by N. Lakshminarayan. The movie was based on Shirley L. Arora's novel What Then, Raman? For his portrayal of the innocent Ramu, Puneeth received the award for Best Child Artist at the 33rd National Film Awards. Deccan Herald rated the film #1 among the best "Children's Movies In Kannada".


In his early teens, Appu appeared in Shiva Mecchida Kannappa as the young Kannappa with his elder brother, Shivaraj Kumar. The film is a rehashed version of 1959 film Bedara Kannappa, the debut film of veteran actor Dr. Rajkumar. It was Produced by Raghavendra Rajkumar. 

14. PARASHURAM (1989)

Appu's final child role was in Parashuram (1989), with his father. Later Puneeth returned as a fully fledged hero in movie Appu in 2002.
